Interview with Steven Sapp of Southside Slice in Rosemary Beach
Southside Slice is a fantastic addition to the Rosemary Beach restaurant scene. We had the great pleasure of speaking with Southside Slide co-owner Steven Sapp shortly after they opened in December 2017. Steven graciously shared his story as well as the inspiration behind this new 30A pizza, sub and salad spot. After our conversation, he cooked up a couple pizzas for us to try and I can honestly say it was the best pie I’ve had in a long, long time.
Questions and Answers from our Interview with Steven Sapp of Southside Slice in Rosemary Beach, FL
30A Prime: Please tell us about yourself and where Southside Slice is located.
Steven: Southside Slice is a new restaurant located on the south side of 30A in Rosemary Beach, Florida next to Town Hall. I grew up in the area and am a born-and-bred local 31 years now. I moved down to Panam City Beach from the north end of the County about 15 years ago to start my restaurant career.
30A Prime: What was the inspiration for opening Southside Slice here in RMB?
Steven: Everyone loves pizza and I’m no exception to the rule. I’ve been operating Shades Bar & Grill down the road for 15 years. Pizza just is a passion and a need that needed to be filled in this area.
30A Prime: Who are the owners of Southside Slice?
Steven: Myself, Joe Freer and Greg Wakeham are partners in the establishment and those guys are also partners in Shades Bar and Grill in Inlet Beach. We’re part of a restaurant group from the local area that strives for high-quality service and high-quality food.
30A Prime: What are some of the different types of pies you have to offer here at Southside Slice and why are you different from other pizza restaurants on 30A?
Steven: We do offer your typical vegetable pizza, supreme pizza and we also offer some cool specialty pizzas… For example, we offer a white pizza and a Surf and Turf pizza.
30A Prime: From where do you source the ingredients that go into your pizzas, subs and salads?
Steven: We use local farms for most of our produce needs. For the meats, we pick the best purveyors, the highest quality ingredients with the best flavors.
30A Prime: What is your favorite pizza pie?
Steven: My favorite pizza by far is the Surf N’ Turf. It’s a step outside of the comfort zone. It offers pork belly and grilled shrimp over a typical pie with white sauce and it is delicious.
30A Prime: Do you offer different types of pizzas in term of the crust? Also, do you have a gluten-free pizza option at Southside Slice?
Steven: We offer two different types of pizza. One is our hand-tossed dough which is a very traditional crust and we offer that by the slice, 16 inches or 20 inches. For the gluten-free consumers out there we offer a 12-inch gluten-free pizza here at Southside Slice.
30A Prime: How does the ordering process work here at Southside Slice Rosemary Beach?
Steven: When you walk in the door you’ll be greeted by a friendly face and you order at the counter. After placing your order a staff member will give you a number and you’ll then go choose a table (inside or outside), and we’ll bring the food to you. Hopefully, you’ll give one of our canned wines a try as well. They are really popular and go great with pizza.
30A Prime: Please tell us more about your canned wines.
Steven: For our canned wine selection we’ve got your typical varieties… We have Pinot Griggio, Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay and a very trendy Rose. Canned wine is a tough sell for people who really enjoy traditional wine but I encourage them to step outside their comfort zones and give it a try. The feedback we’ve received thus far in regards to our canned wines has been overwhelmingly positive.
30A Prime: What type of beer selection do you have here at Southside Slice?
Steven: Focusing on high-quality ingredients we selected our local breweries Idyll Hounds, Grayton Beer and Proof Brewing Company in Tallahassee. They are the highlights of our beer menu and we have everything from IPAs to Pale Ales to Bonde Ales.
30A Prime: In addition to pizza, what else is on your food menu?
Steven: Besides pizza, we also offer high-quality subs and salads. Our most popular salad so far is the Greek Salad. In regards to subs and sandwiches, we offer a Roasted Italian Chicken sub and Meatball sub which are flying off the shelves.
30A Prime: The location of Southside Slice here in RMB is awesome. You must be thrilled to have this space… yes?
Steven: Yes for sure, we’re really happy to be located here in Rosemary Beach.
30A Prime: Please tell us about your lead Chef.
Steven: We’ve brought on an interesting chef in Ken Duenas. Ken is going to be our corporate chef for Southside Slice, Shades and Pescado when it opens in February. He’s selected a very specialty-driven, high quality driven menu here at Southside.
30A Prime: What are your hours of operation?
Steven: We’re open from 11 am to 10 pm and we’re dine in or carry out.
30A Prime: What would you like to say to people that have not yet experienced Southside Slide?
Steven: Please come check us out next time you’re in Rosemary Beach, we’re located right next door to Town Hall on the south side of highway 30A. We would love to have you here at Southside Slice.
