Dr. Lisa LaPointe and her Team are Ready To Brighten Your Child’s Smile in Santa Rosa Beach
Attention parents with children… There is now a satellite location for Panhandle Pediatric Dentistry in Santa Rosa Beach, located at 870 Mack Bayou Road, Suite A. I sat down recently with Dr. Lisa LaPointe and her team, eager to learn more about the practice and what parents can expect when bringing their children to this new state-of-the-art facility.
After a short career as a Speech Language Pathologist, Dr. LaPointe returned to school to fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor. To achieve her goal, Dr. LaPointe enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Upon completion of her pediatric dental residency at the University of Florida and Shands Hospital in Gainsville, she practiced Public Health Dentistry through the National Health Service Corp. Recognizing a need in our community for a Pediatric Dentist, Dr. LaPointe joined Panhandle Pediatric Dentistry in Panama City and recently opened the Santa Rosa Beach satellite location.
Dr. LaPointe is assisted by a team with over 22 years of combined experience. Her team includes Noelle Harris, RDH, Robin Wilkey, Dental Assistant and Victoria Bowles, Dental Assistant and Office Manager. They are trained to work with children, using smaller tools and child-centered dental terms, always aiming to make your child’s dental visit positive and fun. You can expect that the dental team will clean, floss and apply topical fluoride to your child’s teeth during a routine preventative visit. They even show your child how to brush and floss their teeth, complete with child-sized mirrors. Dr. LaPointe also performs special procedures, including white-tooth colored fillings, porcelain and stainless steel crowns, baby root canal treatments and extractions.
Dental Care Guidelines and Early Intervention
Dr. LaPointe says the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children begin seeing a dentist no later than their first birthday. She performs a lap exam for small children and discusses oral hygiene, growth and development and dietary habits with parents. Dr. LaPointe says, “The development of dental caries (cavities) is largely preventable, so education and early intervention is key.”
Dr. LaPointe and her team also recommend:
- Avoid frequent snacking, as it lessens the amount of time sugar and food particles adhere to the teeth
- Avoid frequent sweet drinks throughout the day (flavored milk, juice, soda, sweet tea)
- Avoid any sweetened liquid in a bottle
- Encourage water throughout the day
- Supervised brushing by parents to make sure children are brushing all areas of the teeth, twice a day (morning and bedtime)
- Flossing when the teeth begin to touch
- Wiping your baby’s gums with a wet cloth after each feeding, whether breast or bottle fed, and begin cleaning your baby’s teeth as soon as they erupt
