30A Prime Interview with Gypsea Crepes
Gypsea Crepes is one of my favorite places to eat in Panama City Beach so I was extremely excited to learn we had an interview set up with the founding owner, Okato Nakamura. This PCB hidden gem food spot serves up unique Japanese style crepes that are absolutely amazing. Don’t take my word for it though, instead, look at the overwhelmingly positive reviews they have on Google and Facebook…
Below are the Questions and Answers from our interview with Okato Nakamura, owner of Gypsea Crepes in Panama City Beach…
Question: How did you come up with the idea for a restaurant that features crepes in Panama City Beach?
Okato’s Answer: When my family and I went to Japan about 4 years ago, we went to a crepes shop. Crepes are super popular in Japan. My kids and wife loved it and we realized that there was nothing like it in Panama City Beach or the surrounding area. So, we thought it would be a good idea to open up a crepes shop here in PCB.
Question: I don’t see many plates or eating utensils in this restaurant… Why is that?
Okato’s Answer: That is correct… We don’t use forks, plates, knives or anything like that. Our crepes are wrapped in a cone shape so people eat with their hands while they walk around, shop and go about their business. Our concept for consuming our crepes is very laid back and casual.
Question: What is your favorite Gypsea Crepe?
Okato’s Answer: I really like “The Miki” with chicken as well as “The Buffalo”. Those are my favorite crepes at the moment. The Buffalo has blue cheese, beef, craisins, tomatoes, onions and spinach.
Question: How did you come up with the logo for Gypsea Crepes?
Okato’s Answer: The logo for Gypsea Crepes was inspired by the surfboards I make which are called “Soul Arch“. Both of my kids like to surf and when we have time we go surfing together.
Question: What are the hours of operation at Gypsea Crepes?
Okato’s Answer: We’re open Tuesday through Sunday, closed on Mondays and we’re open from 9 am to 6 pm.
Question: What’s the story behind that cool board map you have hanging in your store?
Okato’s Answer: From the first day we opened Gypsea Crepes I’ve asked our customers where they are from and a lot of times they are from far away places such as Europe and the other American States. So I thought it would be a good idea to put up a board map and let customer pin where they came from in the world.
Question: In addition to delicious Crepes, what else can customer purchase here?
Okato’s Answer: We have Gypsea Crepes T-shirts for sale as well as Soul Arch Surfboards, hats, stickers and more.
Question: How long have you been cooking incredible food?
Okato’s Answer: I’ve been cooking for 25 years so it has been my passion and when I saw those crepes in Japan I knew we had to do it here in Panama City Beach, FL.
