Supporting the Charitable Efforts of the SWPFA
Imagine that your family has finally arrived in Walton County for the restful and fun vacation that you have been dreaming about all year. You have a few days of rest and relaxation on the beach, riding your bike and eating at nice restaurants. On the third night of your stay, while your family is sleeping, a fire breaks out in your rental. You are glad your family makes it out safe. The house and everything in it is destroyed, including everything you brought for your vacation. Your credit cards, wallet, purse and everything you need to function has perished in the fire. Where do you turn for help?
The South Walton Professional Firefighters Association (SWPFA), consisting of members from the South Walton Fire District, might come to the rescue once again. In addition to putting out fires, our local firefighters enjoy giving back to the community. The charitable arm of the SWPFA has many causes they have supported over the years, raising money through various community events.
The SWPFA votes on various giving opportunities, and have used funds in the past to help local and vacationing families with immediate help when they have lost everything in a fire. This help provides affected families with essentials like a hotel and food. Additionally, the firefighters have supported causes such as a burn camp for children that takes place each summer in Northwest Florida. When local children return to school after summer, and you see firefighters reminding you to slow down with their signs, the SWPFA provides lunch and drinks for the day for firefighters working the event. The SWPFA has even built handicap ramps for local citizens who cannot afford them.
How do they raise the funds to support these causes? Traditionally, they have been able to collect money by hosting boot drives. But this year, due to a county ordinance change, which prohibits solicitation like they have done in the past, the SWPFA is holding a raffle to raise funds. Tickets are $100.00 each and the drawing will be held on Labor Day. The raffle package includes:
- 7 Days in a Cottage in South Walton through Sandpiper Vacation Rentals
