No Bananas with Florida Boy Adventures

Interview with Captain Hunter Ray founder of Florida Boy Adventures

The 30A Prime team was presented with a rare opportunity to interview Captain Hunter Ray of Florida Boy Adventures and we took full advantage of it. He can take up to six guests at a time out on the Choctawhatchee Bay for some Florida Boy fishing that is unparalleled. However, before your trip please note that Captain Hunter does have a few rules

  1. Don’t bring an ice chest as one is always on the boat.
  2. Do bring beer (and share with the Captain at the end of the day).
  3. No bananas aboard his boat.

Hunter Ray Florida Boy AdventuresHe’s not monkeying around! Captain Hunter says Bananas on a boat are bad luck and this myth goes back to the pirate days.

He told us a true story about what can go wrong when bananas are brought on a vessel and it goes like this…  Captain Hunter entered into a fishing tournament and his friend brought a banana on board.  He immediately told his friend that he needed to throw the banana overboard, but to no avail. The friend finished the banana throwing the peel into the waters below. Peril became his friend as the next fish caught jumped in the air.  The hook that was in the fish mouth ended up in the friend’s foot which resulted in him going overboard. So just remember that bananas are a no go on Florida Boy Adventures charters.

Captain Hunter Ray is quite the family man with a beautiful wife, six-year-old daughter and another one on the way. That’s one of the things that sets Florida Boy Adventures apart from other charters…  It’s a family business through and through.  His father is often a part of Florida Boy trips and occasionally Hunter’s daughter helps as well.  Captain Ray’s grandfather was Chat Holley and yes, the road was named after him. He was one of the first people to live on the Choctawhatchee Bay and to fish it on a regular basis.

Fishing is in Captain Ray’s blood and he truly enjoys it.  He’s a local boy who knows all the best fishing spots and has a special bait he takes out with him. We asked what this special bait was but it’s the Captain’s secret.

Florida Boy Adventures is not strictly a fishing charter.  Captain Hunter Ray offers additional services such as sight-seeing, dolphin cruises, sunset cruises and even facilitates real-estate showings from the water.  The dolphin and sunset cruises are extremely popular with tourists vacationing along the 30A corridor.  His real-estate charter is unique and extremely handy for those looking to sell bay front South Walton property as well as for those looking to purchase waterfront property.  Hunter coordinates trips with real-estate agents and buyers to provide a unique perspective from the water.Aerial View of Florida Boy Adventures Fishing Boat

No matter what charter you take with Florida Boy Adventures you’re sure to have a lot of fun.  Having said that, fishing charters are still and will always be his bread and butter. With Hunter’s knowledge and guidance you’re sure to catch lots of fish!  He told us that during the summer, trout and redfish are most prevalent but you’re likely to catch a nice variety no matter the season.

Now, don’t worry if you’re on vacation and don’t have a fishing license because the captain carries one for you.  Likewise, no need to get your hands dirty at the end of the day as Captain Ray will personally clean and fillet your catch.  The only thing you’ll have to do is light your gill, pop a cold one and think back on the fun you had.

Captain Hunter Ray hopes to see you on his boat soon. If you have questions, he’s happy to help you pick the best charter for your family.  For more information and to book a trip with Florida Boy Adventures go here…  Florida Boy Adventures Website
